Motorcycle racer retains title
BEST RACE: Stacey Killworth. Picture by www.sports-pics.co.uk
A SOUTHEND motorcycle racer retained his title in a dramatic meeting earlier this month.
The BK Triumph racing team, consisting of Stacey Killworth, brother Nick and Greg Smith, were joined by guest rider Dave Tetley in making the trip to Pembrey in Wales for the penultimate meeting in the British Historic Racing calendar.
Stacey went into the meeting leading both the Pre 1962 and 1972 classes, heading Greg in the former class by 33 points.
However, the EG Lawrence & Sons-sponsored Greg suffered a disappointing weekend after picking up a valve problem which meant Stacey claimed the Pre 1962 championship after extending his lead to 70 points, with just 60 points on offer from the remaining meeting.
It is a different story in the Pre 1972 category where Stacey held a 36 point lead over Ben Kingham on his Vincent going into the meeting.
The races proved to be action packed, with Stacey picking up one race victory out of four races.
Stacey said: “I probably had the race of my life in one of the races. There was four of us scrapping for the lead and, going into the last lap, I was fourth.
“But by the end of it, I was in first. I picked up the fastest lap. It was an awesome race.”
In the second race, on Sunday Stacey was behind Kingham when it started to drizzle halfway through the race.
“I started to back off and Ben saw this and started to push. But going into the hairpin, he highsided, and I had to take evasive action onto the grass. It was a nasty incident, but apart from cosmetic damage, he was ok thankfully.”
Stacey’s brother Nick also heads the Novice Championship by three points after producing a last corner move on the last lap to claim the win, as well as having good showings in the Pre-1962 class.
The next rounds take place over the weekend of September 25/26 at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire.

Mixed Fortunes For Motorcycle Team
BUSY: It was an exciting weekend for Stacey Killworth and his BK Triumph team. Picture by www.sport-pics.co.uk
A SOUTHEND motorcycle racing team enjoyed the highs and lows at their recent race meeting last weekend.
The BK Triumph Racing team made the short journey to Lydden Hill in Kent to take part in the latest rounds of the British Historic Racing (BHR) series.
Riders Stacey Killworth, brother Nick, and Greg Smith had varied fortunes during the weekend.
Stacey, who leads in both the Pre 1962 and Pre 1972 class, tried out his new BK Triton 8V 705, which took him to three seconds in the Pre 1972 class.
However, Stacey will revert back to his trustee Triumph T110 for the rest of the season.
He said: “It was very eventful. We had a few teething problems with the new bike so I’ve decided to leave it for this season.
“My closest rival Ben Kingham on the Vincent pulled some points back, so its all to play for in the remaining races.”
The Pre 1962 class sees Stacey lead team-mate Greg, and the category certainly saw some close action over the weekend.
Stacey took three wins in the first three races, but suffered ignition problems in the final race which ruled him out.
Nick, who was on pole position for the race, took the lead, but Greg chased him down and took the lead, but pushed too hard, going down at the hairpin. It meant Nick won his first race in the class in only his fourth ever meeting. He also heads the championship for novices.
Stacey said: “Nick has come on leap and bounds this year. At the start of the year, he was at the back but he has worked his way to the front.
“Once again I must thank JCS Welding and my mum and dad for all the hard work they have put in.”

Racing Team Enjoys Success!
SUCCESS: Stacey Killworth enjoyed a productive weekend at Cadwell.
A HISTORIC motorcycle racing team from Southend had a successful weekend in their latest round of their championships at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire, on Saturday.
BK Triumph Racing riders Stacey Killworth and Greg Smith finished first and second in two races in the Pre 1962 Championship, run by the British Historic Racing organisation.
To add to the team’s joy, Nick Killworth managed to pick up a sixth place as he continues to improve in his first year in motorcycle racing. In the Pre 1972 championship, Stacey managed to pick up a third and second place on his
Triumph T110 against machinery more suited to Cadwell Park’s long straights and sweeping corners.
Stacey heads both championships, while Greg, who has picked up a new sponsor in the form of EG Lawrence & Sons, leads the chase in the Pre 1962 category.
“It was plain sailing for me in the Pre 62 category,” said Stacey. “It was a pretty successful weekend for all of us as me and Greg picked up a one-two double while my brother is racing up the order. “It was a case of damage limitation in the Pre 1972 category, so I was really pleased to pick up the results I achieved.
“One of my main rivals, Ben Kingham, broke down in the first race and didn’t start the second, so that has helped me. I may not have won, but it’s looking in my favour.”
The next round will see a two day meeting at Lydden Hill, Kent, over the weekend of July 31 and August 1.
Stacey added: “Fingers crossed I hope to give my new bike its debut. JCS Welding will be fabricating my new oil tank and I hope it will all be ready before Lydden.”

Team Ready For Action!
RARING TO GO: Stacey Killworth. Picture by www.sport-pics.co.uk
A HISTORIC motorcycle racing team from Southend will return from a long break to take part in their latest round on Saturday.
The BK Triumph Racing Team will travel to Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire, in the British Historic Series after just over a months break in their calendar.
Seven time champion Stacey Killworth has made an impressive start to the season on his Triumph T110.
He currently leads the Pre 1962 and Pre 1972 championships, as he looks to defend his crowns.
In the Pre 1962 championship, Stacey leads with 72 points over team-mate Greg Smith on 60, while in the Pre 1972 class, he heads the table with 87 over the triples of Simon Bartlett (64) and Ben Kingham (63).
But with 15 points for a race win and two races in each class in the one-day meeting, Stacey will not be resting on his laurels.
He said: “It only takes one breakdown for everything to close up again so I cannot rest easy.
“Cadwell Park probably suits me more than the bike. With my Isle of Man experience I like the fast, sweeping corners as I can carry a lot of corner speed.
“However, the track probably suits the triples more than my bike. I hope after I can talk about me being in front of them rather than behind!”

Succcesful Trip North The BK Racing team
OUCH: Stacey Killworth takes a tumble at Three Sisters. Picture by www.sport-pics.co.uk
A SOUTHEND motorcycle racing team gained impressive finishes after their latest rounds of their championships.
BK Triumph Racing made the long trek north to the Three Sisters track in Wigan, Lancashire, to take part in the second round of the British Historic Racing series.
It was a double header meeting, with races on the Saturday and Sunday.
Seven-time champion Stacey Killworth took part in eight races over the weekend as he defends the Pre 1972 and Pre 1962 championships on his Triumph T110.
However, the weekend did not get off to the perfect start for Stacey who crashed out on the second lap of the first Pre 1962 race.
After making repairs, it did not get much better in the second race for Stacey, who finished first on the road, but was adjudged to have jumped the start and was given a ten second penalty.
Normal service resumed in the Pre 1972 class as Stacey took two wins on Saturday, and it was a clean sweep of victories on Sunday as he took double wins in each category to head each championships.
Stacey’s team-mates in the Pre 1962 class, Nick Killworth and Greg Smith also produced impressive results.
In his second ever race weekend, Nick managed his best ever result with fourth place, while Greg took three seconds and a third to go second in the championship behind Stacey.
Stacey, who took eight wins out of eight races at Three Sisters in 2008, said: “It was a very eventful weekend. My love/hate relationship with Three Sisters continues.
“It was all hands on deck fixing the bike after the crash, but I was disappointed to get the penalty in the second Pre 1962 race. I thought the starter was about to drop the flag and was trying to anticipate it, but was surprised to see her raise the flag. I had already engaged the clutch and went forward before realising the flag hadn’t dropped but the damage was done.
“Apart from that, it was a good weekend. Greg and Nick both picked up great results, and with Greg behind me in the Pre 1962 championship, things are looking good.
The next meeting takes place at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire, over just one day on Sunday, June 20th.
“I’ve always liked Cadwell and hope we can get a good result,” said Stacey. “There maybe more pressure in the Pre 1972 class this time around.
Three Sisters suited my bike due to its tight nature, but Cadwell is about power, so we may lose out to other bikes, but we’ll see what happens.”

Triumph team head north for the next round
CONFIDENT: Stacey Killworth. Picture by www.sport-pics.co.uk
A SOUTHEND motorcycle racing team will be making a long trip north to take part in the next round of their championships.
The BK Triumph Racing Team will travel about 260 miles to the Three Sisters track in Wigan, Lancashire, to race in the second round of the British Historic Racing series this weekend.
After the first round at Mallory Park over the Easter weekend, seven time champion Stacey Killworth got his defences of the Pre 1972 and Pre 1962 unlimited championship off to a good start with three victories and a second place to head the tables.
Team-mate Greg Smith will be looking to build on fifth and fourth places in the Pre 1962 category while Stacey’s brother Nick will be enjoying his second ever race weekend after making his debut at Mallory.
Stacey said: “We’re pretty confident for the weekend and have our fingers crossed that we all have good results and I can defend my lead.
“I’m a little bit concerned about the weather as the track is really a go-kart track and a lot of two-stroke fumes and rubber gets laid down. So if it rains the track will be very slippery.”
The Three Sisters track sparkes mixed feelings for Stacey.
“Three Sisters in terms of results has been good to me,” he said. “I picked up my best ever result in 2008 with eight wins out of eight races.
“But I don’t particularly like the track. It’s a point and squirt track and very hard work as its a mile a lap, but it has eight or nine turns, so there is no rest.”

Strong start for Southend racing team
THREE WINS: Stacey Killworth recorded three comfortable victories. Picture by www.sport-pics.co.uk
A SOUTHEND motorcycle racer started his defence of two titles in style earlier this month.
Stacey Killworth and his BK Triumph Racing Team made the trip up to Leicestershire to race in the first round of the British Historic Racing series at Mallory Park on the Easter weekend.
The seven time champion returned to defend his Pre 1972 unlimited championship on his Triumph T110, as well as the Pre 1962 championship.
Team-mates Greg Smith and Stacey’s brother, Nick, making his first ever start, also competed in the Pre 1962 championship, also on Triumph T110s.
However, after a frantic first race in the Pre 1972 which Stacey finished first on the road but dropped to second due to a penalty, he raced on to three more victories in each category to take the lead in both championships after the first round.
He said: “The weekend went very well. The first race was very chaotic, and I was very unhappy with the penalty, but after that it was very comfortable.
“I have got off to a good start with getting the championship lead in both categories, which surprised somewhat as I was expecting to struggle as other riders raise their game and improve their bikes over the winter.”
The first race in the Pre 1972 championship saw Stacey drawn ninth place on the grid, but a problem with grid markings meant Stacey could not see where he had to start from.
After a few hairy moments coming out of the seat due to cold tyres, Stacey was nearly caught up in an incident.
“I was following Simon Bartlett on a 930 triple when he went wide and nearly went off the circuit,” said Stacey. However he somehow managed to regain it, but his turning angle was so sharp he nearly slammed into me as I was coming past. It was a little bit scary!”
With a gap behind himself and leader Ben Kingham on a Vincent, Stacey managed to close him down in the remaining laps and pull away from him until the chequered flag.
However, joy was soon turned to disappointment as Stacey received a ten second penalty for an out of position start, and was dropped to second place, only two seconds behind the winner Kingham.
The remaining races saw Stacey take the flag first, while in the Pre 1962 races, Nick suffered disappointment in his first race when his throttle cable snapped on the way to the start.
However, he made up for it in the second race, producing a strong finish to take the flag, while Greg picked up useful results with a fifth in the first race, improving to fourth in the second.
The next round will see the BK Triumph Racing Team head to Three Sisters in Wigan over the weekend of May 8/9.

Double Win For Stacey!

A SOUTHEND historic motorcycle racer has clinched his second successive championship.
Stacey Killworth, 32, from Southend, is celebrating after winning a season long battle with Iain Cramp to win the Pre 1972 Unlimited Championship on his 1961 Triumph T110 run by BK Triumph.
But is was not just one, but two championships Stacey picked up as he also won the Pre 1962 Unlimited class.
The final meeting held by the British Historic Racing organisation took place in the picturesque surroundings of Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire.
With four races in each category over the weekend of September 26/27, Stacey held a 16 point lead in the Pre-1972 championship.
However all the nerves vanished on Saturday when he took four wins, two apiece in each championship.
With both championships wrapped up, Stacey won the first race in the Pre 1972 classes on Sunday, but after being held up on the first lap in the second race, he found himself in last position.
However, he showed why he became the champion with a storming ride to come back and finish in fourth place.
Stacey said: “The pressure was on as my thoughts were on the championships, but it all went to plan on the Saturday.
“I would have liked to have won the final race of the season, but that’s how it goes sometimes. It’s been a great season and a perfect way to end the year.
“There are so many people I would like to thank this year. Parkstone Motor Company, JCS Alloy Welding, Leigh Classic Motorcycle, my mum and dad but especially my partner Sally. Without them this would not be possible.”
